As the U.S. records its worth year for measles spread since 2019, the Illinois Department of Public Health Friday will hold an update on the status of the highly contagious virus with cases across the state.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1,267 cases of measles had been confirmed in the U.S. as of July 1, 2025, including cases in Palmetto State neighbors Georgia and North Carolina along with 35 other states. The CDC has confirmed three measles deaths so far this year.
The state will provide updates online on Tuesdays and Fridays. The deaths of two children have been linked to the measles outbreak in West Texas.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the U.S. is currently experiencing its worst measles outbreak in more than 30 years, according to the Associated Press. On Wednesday, the CDC said the 2025 case count has surpassed the 2019 count, when there were 1,274 cases for the year.
Measles cases in the U.S. have surged to a record high, 25 years after the virus was declared eliminated in 2000.
