Norway, with a population of 5.5 million, has set an ambitious target of all new car sales being zero-emission vehicles by 2025, a decade ahead of the EU’s goal. In August, electric vehicles captured a record 94.3% of new car registrations, driven by the popularity of the Tesla Model Y.

Norway has become the first country where electric cars outnumber petrol-powered cars. Of the 2.8 million registered private cars, over 754,000 are fully electric, surpassing petrol models, with diesel cars still being the most common but in decline.

Hot on the heels of still-dominant diesel cars, electric vehicles now outnumber petrol models for the first time in oil-rich Norway, a world first that puts the country on track to taking fossil fuel vehicles off the road.
