North Carolina prepares for a winter storm, with officials urging the public to stay off roads and securing supplies.
The Dare County Sheriff’s Office, located along the coast, reported that some places received up to 8 inches of snow as first responders urged drivers to stay off ice-covered roads. The wintry weather marked the first time it snowed on the Outer Banks barrier islands since 2018, according to WNCN and WAVY.
Dangerous below-freezing temperatures with even colder wind chills were also expected to last over much of the week in the region. Authorities say three people have died in the cold weather.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation is warning drivers to be extra careful after Tuesday’s winter storm as the snow and ice could refreeze overnight, causing dangerous conditions.
