People living in Plains, Georgia are remembering the legacy of President Jimmy Carter after he was laid to rest Thursday.

Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter lived in the same house in Plains, Georgia from 1961 until their deaths. After Jimmy Carter lost his bid for reelection, he and wife Rosalynn Carter returned to their hometown of Plains, Georgia, where they moved back into the only home they ever owned, located at 209 Woodland Drive.

Atlanta as a Launchpad: While Carter’s home was always in the small Georgia town of Plains, Atlanta gave him the opportunities to cement a political and humanitarian legacy.

10:24 a.m.: Grandson Joshua Carter recalled the former president's years of teaching Sunday school at Marantha Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia. He said that Carter would often share news during his classes, connecting the former president's faith with his desire to help those in need.

“After Friday we are just going to start settling back down and getting back to some type of normal,” said Lynton Earl Godwin, who is known around town as “Boze” and served as the mayor of Plains for 38 years until he retired last January. “The town has been anticipating this, and President Carter was anticipating it also.”

Carter’s body arrived for a second, more intimate service at Maranatha Baptist Church late Thursday afternoon, a small congregation on the outskirts of Plains, Georgia, where he long taught Sunday school.

The state funeral for former President Jimmy Carter will conclude on Thursday with services in Washington, D.C. and his hometown of Plains, Georgia.
