Elon Musk said Austin residents will be able to pay for a fully autonomous Tesla robotaxi ride in June, with an expansion to more US cities planned.

But Tesla has not submitted an application for either permit, representatives from both state agencies told The Examiner on Thursday. Tesla does hold a permit to test its robotaxis on public roads, but according to the DMV, it has not reported using that permit since 2019.

While the initial testing will use Tesla's own fleet of cars, regular customers may be able to add their cars to the ride-hailing fleet next year, Musk says.
