A new area code could soon be added to cities served by the 909. That has local businesses worried about what that means for their existing numbers and advertising.

The change carves out the new area code along the border of San Bernardino and Riverside counties, leaving western San Bernardino County and portions of Los Angeles County custody of the 909 moniker.

According to forecasts, the 909 area code prefixes will be exhausted by March 2019, said Joanne Leung, regulatory analyst with the utilities commission.

The 11-digit dialing process will be mandatory starting Jan. 23 for all customers with a telephone number in the 909 area code.

A state judge today is expected to order utility regulators to consider adding two area codes to the sprawling Inland Empire, possibly by the end of the year.
