Between 800 and 2,000 people were killed over three days during the crackdown surrounding the presidential election, which the incumbent head of state officially won with nearly 98% of the vote. The United Nations has called for a 'thorough and impartial investigation.

“As days keep going, we’re establishing and finding out that more people have died in different regions,” Chadema’s director of communications Brenda Rupia told CNN.

"I urge everyone to avoid all forms of violence and to pursue the path of dialogue," the pope said.
