Rail passengers can soon buy tickets to ride Amtrak between Mobile and New Orleans. The service announced the resumption of travel between the two cities for the first time since Hurricane Katrina halted Amtrak’s route along the Alabama Gulf coast back in August of 2005.

Amtrak is planning a new route between Mobile, Ala., and New Orleans, La., twice daily called "Mardi Gras Service."

When deciding names for its trains, Amtrak has a tendency to choose ones that are regionally-focused, as proven by the titles of its two other services, City of New Orleans and Crescent. Gulf Coast Limited was the name of the last passenger train service to run daily between New Orleans and Mobile.
